City Councilman Brian O’Neill last week voted against Mayor Jim Kenney’s proposal to increase the real estate transfer tax and slow down scheduled wage tax rate reductions during a committee hearing.
O’Neill also remains opposed to any increase in the property tax rate.
“The majority of my constituents will already end up paying higher tax bills as a result of the administration’s new property assessments,” he said. “The idea of raising the property tax rate on the heels of an increase in the assessments only adds insult to injury. I will be voting against any property tax increases and urge my colleagues in City Council to do the same.”
At the hearing, O’Neill and Councilman Bobby Henon voiced support for increasing the existing $30,000 homestead exemption to either $45,000 (Henon) or $50,000 (O’Neill), rather than the $40,000 that is being considered. ••
